Funeral poems and readings chosen with the help of Brunskill Family Funerals

Funeral poems, readings, songs and music

Finding the right words to honour your loved one

A carefully chosen verse can say so much about how we are feeling. Here is a small selection to read, or to use as a starting point for your own.

If you are looking for that special poem or reading for your loved one's funeral or memorial, Brunskill Family Funerals has a selection here that may be the ideal choice, or inspiration in finding or creating your own choice of funeral poem.

A carefully chosen verse, poem or reading can say so much about how we are feeling following the death of a family member or friend. They can bring comfort and solace, either just to read in a reflective quiet moment or as a personal tribute to be used during a ceremony or included as part of a service sheet.

Our team is happy to provide advice and support. We work with families and friends with funeral arrangements in Kingston, Wandsworth, Hounslow and the wider area. If where you live is not listed above, it doesn't mean that we can't care for your family. We are happy to travel across the UK where required.

A sample of our selection

Poems and readings families return to

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?
Not, what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of his birth.
Nor what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with words of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away?

She Is Gone (He Is Gone)

You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

We hold a much wider selection of funeral poems, readings, songs and music than we can show here. Ask us and we will send the full booklets over, or bring them with us to the arrangement meeting.

Making it personal

Music, readings and who will deliver them

Most crematoria we work with, including Kingston, Mortlake and North East Surrey, have modern music systems that can play almost any recorded track, as well as webcasting and visual tribute facilities. You can read more about each venue on our local crematoriums page.

If a family member would like to read but is worried they may not manage on the day, it is worth naming a second person to step in. Nobody will think less of anyone for handing over, and having a plan takes the pressure off.

If you are planning ahead, noting down your chosen poem, reading or song now means your family will not have to guess later. Our prepaid funeral plans and the My Funeral Wishes form are both good places to record them.
